Our Heavenly Mother clothes us with her mantle the Scapular

Happy feast day

The Blessed Virgin Mary handed the Scapular to Saint Simon Stock and promised that “Whosever dies wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire” to make this privilege available to everyone the Church extended it to all the laity who are willing to be invested in the brown Scapular of the Carmelite.

Over the Centuries the Roman Catholic Church has approved a number of scapulars for popular devotional use; it includes the Blue Scapular of the Immaculate Conception, the Green Scapular of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the White Scapular of Our Lady of Ransom. The most famous is the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel or popularly called the Brown Scapular.

The Brown Scapular has also figured in two of Our Lady’s greatest modern apparitions: the last apparition at Lourdes occurred on July 16, the feast of Our lady of Mt. Carmel; and when Our Lady of Fatima made the sun dance, she was wearing the scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Great saints were clothed in this Garment of Grace like Saint Teresa of Avila, Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, Saint Maravillas of Jesus, Saint Mariam Baouardy and many more Holy Carmelites.

The Sabbatine Privilege
The Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel has promised to save those who wear the scapular from the fires of hell; She will also shorten their stay in purgatory if they should pass from this world still owing some debt of punishment.
Brown Scapular of Mount Carmel
This promise is found in a Bull of Pope John XXII. The Blessed Virgin appeared to him and, speaking of those who wear the Brown Scapular, said, “I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in purgatory I shall free so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting.”
The Blessed Virgin assigned certain conditions which must be fulfilled:
1.Wear the Brown Scapular continuously.
2.Observe chastity according to one’s state in life (married/single).
3.Recite daily the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin OR Observe the fasts of the Church together with abstaining from meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays OR With permission of a priest, say five decades of Our Lady’s Most Holy Rosary OR With permission of a priest, substitute some other good work.
Pope Benedict XV, the celebrated World War I Pontiff, granted 500 days indulgence for devoutly kissing your scapular.
